I told you so. It's all you people ever do.

Sometimes I hate it when I'm right.

[The video flicks on. It wobbles a bit, then steadies, showing a lovely view of the Elegante version of the moon.]

Know what today is? It's Moon-landing day. On July 20, 1969, the first human being to reach a place outside our planet first stepped out onto the surface of the Moon.

Big day. We should try living up to it sometime.

While that's very impressive, you seem to be forgetting that this ship serves as home and prison to more than just people from your planet.

That doesn't negate the accomplishment of it. The extremes to which human ingenuity can adapt are demonstrated, regardless.

[And if you don't like moon landing day, you and everyone from your stupid world can go jump into the ocean. Kim has lost a friend. Again. It's making her surly.]

True enough.

We never went to the moon, that I'm aware.

[Because for all he knows they did in the thirty-year span he missed.]

It doesn't matter, they did it for you. For the world.

Now it's your turn to make an accomplishment worth remembering.

[audio]

[identity profile] notwhatiwas.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
[There's a long moment of silence.]

I'm fairly certain helping to save the world from a giant hunk of burning interplanetary rock summoned by the son of a beauty and a psychopath to get back at humankind for leading him to believe he was the child of a semisentient alien supervirus counts as an accomplishment worth remembering.

[That came out very fast, but level and matter-of-fact.]

But it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong in my life.

Who the hell'd want to go to the moon? Isn't it just a giant rock in space that doesn't do anything but reflect light and even then is pretty lazy about it?

Bottom of the ocean at least has things that're alive.

[Audio]

[identity profile] autodidacticone.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
And that's why people from your world will always be trapped in the cradle that birthed them.

[She's sincerely unimpressed, Reno. Can you tell?]

Infants.

[Audio]

[identity profile] messyturk.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Uhm yeah, at least we can bring back the dead so long as they haven't been returned to the lifestream.

[Can you tell he's not impressed either? They're busy improving medical science, not bouncing around on space rocks.]

Can you go to the store and buy something to bring someone back from death?

[And no, he's not caring that he's being insensitive.]

[Audio]

[identity profile] autodidacticone.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Shut.

[Kim's angry. Really, honestly angry at you, Reno. Today Kim lost a friend, and your bullshit about death is not helping.]

Up.

Imma human an' I've never been ta' Earth.

[identity profile] standardpackage.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
So how can I live up ta' it?

[identity profile] autodidacticone.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Because you're human. Just because you don't know someone personally, it doesn't negate their accomplishment.

Humans in your dimension went to the moon?! S-so cool--!

It's dead. Nothing but powder and craters. I've never been, personally, but eyewitness reports that it has a "magnificent desolation."

[identity profile] teethofneedles.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Big deal. We travel to another planet all the time.

[identity profile] autodidacticone.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Really.

[Someone doesn't believe you]

[identity profile] autodidacticone.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. That's...

[Well, it's not impossible]

That's nice.

The moon? How can someone land on the moon?

[audio]

[identity profile] autodidacticone.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
A rocket-propulsion vehicle that can move fast enough to break out of the planet's gravity well can, if navigated precisely, achieve a moon landing. It was considered the most important benchmark of scientific progress, at the time.
